Remote Job Hunt 2.0

Remote Weekly turned 1 year a few weeks ago. 🎉

The goal was always to deliver high-quality remote job offers to online professionals. In mid-2020, I made some changes, which in retrospect shifted the project in the wrong direction.

Today, I am happy to announce – we are back on track!

We are now focused 100% on our subscribers and the value we provide.

The goal is to deliver relevant remote job offers. Anything “remote during covid” or “remote 3 days per week” will get mercilessly removed – so you don’t have to deal with BS like that.

And yes, we are rolling out location filtering soon.

Version 2.0 also introduces remote jobs API. If you are interested in building your own job board (or similar product), take a look.

The Catch 22 of Freelancing: How to Land Your First Client

Trust is the most valuable currency in freelancing. Unfortunately, you don’t have much of it while looking for your first client. It also happens to be the answer to Google query, “What are the biggest problems freelancers and their clients face.”

Freelancers differ from employees. Not just because of the work hours. Successful freelancer has to wear many hats. Be a jack of all trades, as they say. But most importantly. A great freelancer has to be reliable and trustworthy. If you say you will deliver, you deliver. No matter what.

Did you notice I didn’t mention anything about skillset? That was intentional. Top-notch hard skills don’t make you a good freelancer. Communication, punctuation, and people skills do. Anyone can buy a book, online course, or read a manual to a new, shiny framework or graphic design software. Continuously delivering slightly above expectations, that’s harder.

Trust is a big problem in freelancing. It’s an even bigger problem for freelancing newbies. Your potential clients have little reason to trust you. You can’t blame them.

  • Are you gonna deliver on time, or ever?
  • Will you cover all the scope?
  • What about any future issues, bugs, or complaints?

They don’t know.

Of course, this goes both ways. Will you get paid after investing hours, days, or weeks into a project? You can only build trust with actions and time.

There are, however, some things you can do to improve your chances.

So. What can you do to increase your chances of landing a client next time you present yourself and your work?

Working From Home Sucks (if Not Done Properly)

It is often glorified and hyped. Especially now. But working from home isn’t all rainbows and unicorns. And if you don’t prepare properly, you will taste the bad side of this otherwise incredible perk.

Cool. What was your point again?

Let me explain.

Offices are built for proper work. Chances are, your home isn’t.

Why? Well, because… it’s your home. It was made for something else.

Every work gets tedious and boring sometimes. No matter what you do. Even if you love it tremendously. There will be dull, repetitive, and boring aspects of it. Why would you associate your cozy apartment with something like that?

And another thing. Space. Why sacrifice a whole room in your house for work? Why not make it into an entertainment center, a gym, a kid’s room, or even a guest room for your parents?

See? As it turns out, working from home isn’t always as glamorous as described. Let’s go through the most significant pain points and ways to fix them.
